Rules and gameplay

This article will focus on European roulette . The primary difference between European and American roulette is that in European roulette, there is a single zero, whereas in American roulette there is also a double zero in addition to zero. For gameplay purposes, American roulette has a higher house edge as a result of the additional double zero, when compared to European roulette.

In European roulette, there are a total of 37 numbers – 18 of which are red, 18 are black, and 1 is green (the zero). After bets are placed, a ball is spun on a wheel and whatever number in the ball lands on is the winning number. Bettors place their wager by placing chips on the number or numbers they wish to wager on. Bettors are also able to wager on colours (red/black), whether the number is odd or even, if the numbers are low (1-18) or high (19-36), or on groupings of numbers. For groupings of numbers, bettors have a few options. A common grouping bet is known as a “split,” which is where a bettor places a chip on shared edges between two adjacent numbers on the betting table, such as 10 & 13, or 11 & 12. Another typical grouping is a corner (or square) bet, which is where a bettor places a chip on the corner of 4 numbers (such as 4,5,7,8).
